Episode #60 The One Thing

Is multi-tasking serving you?

If you’re tempted to respond with a triumphant “yes” to this question, I hear you! For many of us, especially those who are homeschooling children, the experience of lockdown has made multi-tasking seem more essential than ever.

But is it?

You may feel that you’re able to do more, but when you multitask your way through to do lists and distractions, there’s no real progress. You’re just running really fast on the spot.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

The message I’m bringing you this week is that multi tasking is an illusion. It’s not an achievement, it’s a distraction that will leave you exhausted and unsatisfied (because for every task you complete, 2 will rise to fill the space).

What’s needed is a more strategic approach. You need to work smarter not harder. And all you need to do to achieve this, is focus on The One Thing.

The One Thing, a concept from writer Gary Keller, is the opposite of multitasking. Multi-tasking is like an insatiable beast that doesn’t want you to stop and think and has no interest in you being strategic or efficient. The One Thing has the opposite effect. It makes you think. It forces you to be strategic. It wants you to work smarter, not harder and get where you’re going more easily.
